Well that’s it folks, 2017 is officially in the books. It was quite a year to say the least, and while most of us are probably pretty glad to see it go, we have to admit that 2017 did have some redeeming factors. It gave us Kendrick Lamar’s Damn and “Humble”, launched a thousand memes with Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do”, and introduced us to tons of up-and-coming and new artists. But now that 2017 has passed, we have 2018 to look forward to, and with it, a whole slew of artists old and new to keep our ears peeled for. So without further ado, here’s eight artists to watch for in 2018.
1. Cigarettes After Sex
They’ve been around since 2008, but really appeared on everybody’s radar after their track “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby” appeared on an episode The Handmaid’s Tale this year. They’re equal parts lo-fi and dream-pop, and well worth keeping an eye on.
2. Morgan Saint
We spent a lot of time falling in love with Morgan Saint in 2017, and are so excited to see what she has in store for 2018. She bowled us over when she performed at Bands and Brews in 2017, and has a bright future ahead of her.
3. Phoebe Bridgers
Seemingly out of nowhere, Phoebe Bridgers stormed onto the scene in 2017 and grabbed everyone’s attention. She blends indie-folk and pop styles that are super catchy, and at only 23 years old, she surely will give us a lot more in 2018.
4. Sabrina Claudio
She released her debut album back in October, and since then we’ve been eagerly awaiting anything and everything she has planned. Check out her work with 6lack and definitely look out for her name again.
5. Lil Xan
Look, I know I’ve clowned on him before for his name, but Lil Xan’s sound is really refreshing and exciting. Make fun of “Soundcloud” rappers all you want, but the kids got clout and a lot of potential.
6. Jessie Reyez
She’s got so much versatility as an artist that she sounds as good over a trap beat as she does on a solo acoustic guitar. Expect to see her making big moves this year.
7. Alma
Besides having serious #hairgoals, Finnish pop-sensation Alma also has some major music flair. She’s already worked alongside the likes of French Montana, and has a no-nonsense, feeling-herself attitude that will carry her far in 2018.
8. Superorganism
I just got turned on to this group, and I love them already. They’re an eclectic and freaky eight-member collective coming from multiple countries with a classic indie-pop, alt-rock sound that’s just fun.
