We run through some of our favourite interviews with film and television composers, courtesy of Lakeshore Records, the independent music division of Lakeshore Entertainment.
1) Pedro Bromfman – Narcos composer interview
Bromfman is a Brazilian musician, film composer and music producer known for having scored Elite Squad and Elite Squad 2, the highest grossing film in Brazil’s box office history. Here he talks about honing his craft, why he considers the computer his number one instrument, and using Columbian instruments in a more mainstream way for the Narcosscore.
2) Cliff Martinez – Drive composer interview
In this clip, renowned score composer (and ex Red Hot Chili Peppers and Captain Beefheart drummer) Cliff Martinez discusses working with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn, using synthesizers to sound like Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream, playing the Baschet Crystal and using wind chimes to create the film’s ambient score.
3) Lyle Workman – Superbad composer interview
Guitarist, composer, session musician and music producer Lyle Workman chats about creating music with Bootsy Collins for the Superbad soundtrack, which was performed by a reunion of the original JBs rhythm section with Bootsy and Phelps Collins, Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks, and supplemented by Bernie Worrell.
4) Michael Brook – Brooklyn composer interview
In this segment, Canadian guitarist, inventor, producer, and composer Michael Brook describes his musical beginnings playing in bar bands, and how he used music to heighten rather than push emotions with the score for Oscar nominated Brooklyn, recorded at Abbey Road Studios. Brook also features in another interview where he discusses working with Eddie Vedder on Into the Wild, making solo guitar albums, building guitar devices for U2’s Edge, and more. 5) Charlie Clouser (NIN) – Resident Evil: Extinction composer interview
Nine Inch Nails keyboardist Charlie Clouser has scored a number of films including the Sawseries and Death Sentence. Here he chats about beginning each project with a rhythm, and helping to develop the Resident Evil story beyond the video game with the use of music.
