We chat to Toronto-based Cymba Music Publishing about their current projects and the Canadian music industry.
Hi guys, tell us a little bit about Cymba Music Publishing
We’re based in Toronto, Canada. Cymba, an acronym for “Crushing Your Music Business Apathy”, has been in business for over 20 years. A boutique music publishing company, we are home to diverse creators and emerging musical thinkers.
Our global reach for song pitching is unprecedented, and we share great relationships around the globe. We are also specialists in the “single song” and small catalogue arenas. We’re proud to be home to hitmakers like Davor Vulama, Aileen de la Cruz, Ari Rhodes, Ian Smith and our latest signing, Dennis Ellsworth. Our roster is rounded out by Swedish pop writer Hakan Lundberg and rising star Olivia Wik. Our team includes Vince Degiorgio, our working president (he’s a hit songwriter too), operations consultant Libby Elming and sync representative, Amy Lloyd.
How has Synchtank helped to support the company?
Synchtank is teaching us how much more we can do with the music we create. From keeping it organized, to delivering it to potential partners. It has led to increased and focused internal organization. It has provided us with an easier pitching platform, because we can collaborate on playlists. Synchtank also gives us the option to deliver customized playlists to our supervisor friends, which streamlines the entire pitching process for all involved. The tracking activity function using the tracking link feedback is something we look at too.
What’s new with Cymba Music Publishing?
Our latest signings have been keeping us busy, and our established writers are doing the same. Olivia Wik was recently in Stockholm and in Vancouver readying her new single, Ari Rhodes has been in the studio with synch darling Nuela Charles and has recently finished a terrific EP with Edmonton based artist, TAT. He’s currently riding high with Lexi Strate’s “Diamond Eyes” as part of his on going collaboration with Hands Up partner, Dan Davidson.
Dennis Ellsworth is now writing songs for his 5th album and recently enjoyed a great run of co-writes in Nashville. Davor Vulama has just finished producing a full length rock album for Stephanie Standerwick, which features the buzz song “With You”. Aileen de la Cruz, our resident road warrior, has just completed another block of sessions in the UK and is headed for Japan in May. Our boss, Vince Degiorgio is co-writing an entire album for Japanese pop jazz artist Karen Aoki and is finishing up songs for Caro Emerald’s 3rd album. We are always on the lookout for new writers. It just has to be the right writer.
What’s great about the Canadian music industry?
It seems that Canadians are finally paying attention to and really appreciating our cultural diversity. We are no longer just a place for rock and country. Further to that, we are also exporting some of the greatest talent the world has to offer and not just on the Billboard Hot 100. Parallel lines flow throughout the global music business, which means that placing a song with an artist at a major label even in today’s universe remains the toughest hill to climb. But Canada is finally showing it has no boundaries and that makes companies like Cymba VERY cool.
